The BAFTA Kids Roadshow 2019 in partnership with children’s mental health charity Place2Be is launching in two Cardiff schools on 2 and 3 of April. The Roadshow will visit 10 schools around the UK over the next few months.

The two Cardiff events are at Moorland Primacy School and Peter Lea Primary. CBBC TV presenters Katie Thistleton and Sam Homewood are working with school pupils to boost their confidence and creativity via a TV presenting masterclass.

The guest speaker at Moorland Primary is director and producer of CBBC football drama, Joe Talbot.  Guest speaker at Peter Lea Primary is multi BAFTA-award winning writer/director Adam Tyler.

CBBC and Radio One presenter, and Place2Be Ambassador, Katie Thistleton, said:

“I love hosting the BAFTA Roadshow events for the children in Place2be schools. It’s always amazing to see the positive effect the Bafta and Place2be partnership is having, and we have such a fun day full of confidence building exercises and activities where we celebrate what is brilliant and unique about us all. I always leave with a full heart, even more certain that Place2be should be in every school.”

Catherine Roche, CEO of children’s mental health charity Place2Be, said:

“We’re delighted to be launching the 2019 BAFTA Roadshow in Cardiff.  The events enable children in Place2Be schools to benefit from this powerful communication skills and confidence building experience.  We are proud to have provided mental health support in schools in Cardiff for over ten years and now we wish to use this experience and hope to expand the service further to benefit many more children and school communities across Wales.”

Amanda Berry, OBE, Chief Executive, British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) said: “BAFTA has been partnering with Place2Be for the last three years and supports its values of perseverance, integrity, compassion and creativity. Through our school visits with the BAFTA Kids Roadshow in partnership with Place2Be we aim to champion children’s creativity, teach important life skills through film, television and games and also provide access to positive and diverse role models.”

Emma Gough, Headteacher, Ysgol Gynradd Peter Lea/Peter Lea Primary School, Cardiff said:

The BAFTA roadshow and masterclass is a brilliant opportunity for the pupils at Peter Lea to be inspired by positive role models and develop their own aspirations of what can be achieved through determination and focus.  It will develop their self-confidence and resilience, which will impact positively on their well-being.”

The aims of the Roadshow are:

    About Place2Be

Place2Be is a children's mental health charity providing school-based support and in-depth training programmes to improve the emotional wellbeing of pupils, families, teachers and school staff.

    • Working in partnership with schools, teams of mental health professionals help to create a culture of openness and promote positive mental health, ensuring that potential problems can be identified at an early stage and that children can access support in a safe and familiar environment.
    • Place2Be takes an evidence-based approach – gathering, analysing and using data to challenge and improve services.
    • The charity’s Mental Health Champions programmes for School Leaders and Class Teachers combine expert consultation, advice and training to help build understanding, skills and knowledge of mental health in schools.
    • Place2Be is also a leading provider of specialist training and university-validated child counselling qualifications, from introductory level to Postgraduate Diploma and Masters.
    • HRH The Duchess of Cambridge became Patron of Place2Be in 2013, reflecting her personal interest in and commitment to improving the mental health and emotional wellbeing of children.
    • Early intervention can help prevent mental health problems in adulthood, which cost the UK over £100 billion each year.

  • Run-a-Marathon Challenge for Dementia Revolution

    Fri 29 Mar 2019

This Friday, 29th March 2019, each child from Nursery through to Year 6, will be taking part in the Run-a-Marathon Challenge for Dementia Revolution.  They are aiming to complete 1 mile by running or walking a whopping 10 laps around the Key Stage 2 yard along with their class teacher and Mr Barrett.  By the end of the day, each class will have collectively run their own marathon - or maybe even further!

To promote the challenge and support this great charity, we would like children to collect sponsorship donations, all of which will go to Dementia Revolution. We hope that you will encourage relatives, friends, neighbours and colleagues to give generously to this worthy cause.  Each child who takes part will receive a certificate and there will be prizes for those children who raise the most sponsorship money and who show the most perseverance when taking on the Run-a-Marathon challenge.

As Charity of the Year for the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK have joined forces and created Dementia Revolution, to raise money and power groundbreaking dementia research, overthrow old attitudes and lead the charge towards a cure. You can find out more about Dementia Revolution on their website, at https://dementiarevolution.org/
